South of Midnight delights with its looks and soundtrack,  agen96 which is much better than anyone could expect. It’s a shame, though, that aesthetic experience isn’t followed by equally great gameplay. Blades of Fire stands out with its engaging combat system and weapon customization. Unfortunately, the game can be irritating and even boring at times, which makes it just average.

“I’ve had some of the worst weeks of my career at my day job, and as a result my mental health is shockingly unwell,” Steve writes in his The Alters review… The grimoire is fun for all the flashing lights and mystical effects it conjures, but if magical pew-pew is more your bag there are wands too. Pistols and arquebuses are present too with all the slow reloading that entails, and so are bows. These conventional weapons have unlimited ammo, probably for magical reasons, but grimoires need essence (basically mana, in this context).

Gathering resources means actually going out onto the planet’s harsh landscape and mining directly into its surface. My shopping list includes organics to feed us and the ship, minerals and metals to craft supplies, materials to fund my research, and rapidium to create more alters. 11 Bit Studios has once again found the humanist side in a genre rooted in systems and management. It’s a fantastic base builder and survival sim, but what makes The Alters truly brilliant is how these systems are underlined with vulnerable, emotional moments – like holes being punctured in your space suit.

Nintendo Switch 2 Welcome Tour is a calming, surprisingly engaging hardware exhibition with a handful of cool minigames, a trove of interesting info, and some neat demos that showcase exactly what the little system can do. It makes you feel good about buying the thing, which makes the platform holder’s decision not to bundle it with the console utterly baffling. Featuring expensive add-ons you might not own also won’t impress anyone who’s indignant that the company wants another 10 bucks for this. Each review aims to accurately understand the game’s strengths and weaknesses, helping readers decide which titles deserve their time and money. Other platforms, such as YouTube channels or social media influencers, also contribute valuable perspectives on gaming experiences and trends.

Elden Ring finally marks FromSoftware’s rise to being one of the biggest developers on the planet. By taking what made its previous games sing, and mixing it all up into a genre-defining open world, FromSoftware has created a game that is nothing short of a masterpiece. Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is the definitive PlayStation superhero experience. Building on the first two games in the saga beautifully, this PS5 blockbuster gives us both Peter and Miles as playable characters and lets us loose once again in New York City. Many will say that it doesn’t change a whole lot from Zero Dawn, or break ground that much, but Forbidden West absolutely is one of the best experiences you can get on PS5 right now. And absolutely do not skip the side quests, with some of the best we’ve played on PS5 (or any platform, for that matter) in recent years.

Star Wars Outlaws Review

For the magic averse, it’s also possible to muscle about with a mace in one hand and a pistol in the other, for example. Like in all the best RPGs, it’s not the world you hope to save that matters, but the frivolous jobs you do along the way. I remember a dubious situation between a Paradis woman and her weirdly adoring Xaurip admirers more vividly than any of the major plot beats. Likewise, visiting my companion Marius’s vanquished home village, crouched in the shadow of a giant volcano, was more impactful than finally confronting the fascistic antagonist for the first time. I was more proud of saving a brothel in Paradis than I was of deciding to have mercy on a villain who I really ought to have, in retrospect, killed.

Aside from Stardew Valley’s re-review, only one new game received a 10 from IGN this year, and it was none other than FromSoftware’s first Elden Ring DLC, Shadow of the Erdtree. This new expansion not only adds an entire new area to The Lands Between to explore, but a suite of new weapons, armors, and even combat styles like martial arts, makes FromSoftware’s magnum opus even better.
