There will be no shortage of games to play in January, but don’t count on any spectacular launches. In a word, yes, but the real hero of this video game is a story that’s nothing short of amazing. Marvel’s Spider-Man – The Art of the Game is packed with hundreds of exclusive full-color images of Spider-Man, his suit and equipment, the allies he relies on like MJ Watson and Aunt May, and the deadly villains he battles. This wealth of material is accompanied by exclusive insight into the creative process from the talented developers, artists, and designers responsible for bringing Spider-Man’s world to vivid life. Miles Morales has a lot going on, what with moving to a new neighborhood, dealing with the loss of his father, and the whole gaining super-powers thing.

At the end of the game’s second act, Peter saves Miles from Kraven before the two Spider-Men face off, as Miles tries to get Peter to give up the Symbiote. Miles defeats Peter and captures the Symbiote before the two of them bring the alien suit back to the destroyed rubble of the April May foundation. This fight concludes the game’s second act and sets up a tense final act, as Peter and Harry are set to face off as enemies.

Like many of the game’s quests, the central premise transforms what you’d think superhero work typically looks like. After saving stolen artifacts for the museum, Miles remembers his departed father through his connection to jazz. “My dad really loved Charlie Parker… I guess I need to start listening closer to my playlist now,” he muses. These reflective moments deepen not only the game’s stand-out side content, but also its larger plot. This a dedicated section for the small number of suits that are specifically tied to and/or unlocked within the main story, and therefore are inherently spoilers for certain plot developments or reveals. A series of open-world action adventure games about one of Marvel’s most famous superheroes.

You get to fully experience how fast Peter and Miles whip through the New York City skyline. Eventually, Peter and Miles team up to take Venom down, but Harry is left in a coma as the symbiote is finally destroyed. This leads to two crucial scenes that will lead into Marvel’s Spider-Man 3, as Norman Osborn blames Peter for Harry’s situation and meets up with Dr. Otto Octavius to plan how to defeat him.

Animated Suit – Miles

To cater to this, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 on PC offers a wide range of graphics settings and presets, including options without ray-tracing, like dynamic resolution scaling. Though not wildly different mechanically (they’re separated mostly by a different set of combat powers), the two do feel impressively different, largely thanks to top notch animation work and a commendable attention to detail. How much this dual protagonist feature actually adds to the game is a little questionable I think, but the execution is undeniably slick. Since Spider-Man 2 came out in September 2023, Insomniac has released a number of updates for the game, adding New Game+, mission replay, new suits, and more. But fans had hoped that story DLC would give them more of a reason to return to Insomniac’s wonderful recreation of New York that the addition of new features. Marvel’s Spider-Man 2’s gameplay and its previous iterations, similarly plays like the Arkham series, Assassin’s Creed series, and even Ghost of Tsushima.

In reality, Harry had secretly bonded with the Venom symbiote, which hid within Harry’s body, with its origin revealed to be from a meteorite recovered by Oscorp years prior. After learning Peter is Spider-Man, Harry uses the symbiote to help his best friend fight crime and help people around New York. The symbiote was first glimpsed at the end of Marvel’s Spider-Man, albeit within a stasis tube, and bonded to Harry Osborn to stabilize Harry’s terminal illness.

As well as this, Scott Porter – who voiced Harry Osborn in the first Spider-Man game – confirmed that the character will be appearing in the sequel. In a now-deleted tweet, the actor revealed that, while the character will be coming back, he will not be lending his voice to the role. HM88 -hero may serve as a villain, a not-so-friendly ally in a greater battle, or perhaps even a mix of both throughout the game.

The tasks are often so mundane and repetitive, however, that I did frequently question whether these small, congratulatory nuggets were worth the slog they too often turned out to be. Fight against a variety of new and iconic villains, including an original take on the monstrous Venom, the ruthless Kraven the Hunter, the volatile Lizard and many more. In Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 on PC with ray reconstruction enabled, we see more detailed ray-traced reflections and better-defined ray-traced shadows, especially when viewing raytracing effects at steep angles. We also see improvements in the ray-traced interiors and less ghosting and noise in the ray-traced ambient occlusion.

While Insomniac has a Wolverine game in the works, fans are hoping the developer will also release a Marvel’s Spider-Man spinoff similar in scope to the hugely successful Miles Morales standalone, with Venom the potential focus. The increased dynamics of battles left no time to think about what to throw at enemies.

For Spider-Man 2 high ray tracing specs, you’ll need a GPU architecture upgrade, where only an Nvidia GeForce RTX 4070 or AMD Radeon RX 7900 XT will do. Despite being a PS5 port, the Spider-Man 2 system requirements can ask a lot of your gaming PC, especially if you want to play at 4K with ray tracing enabled. This setup provides access to more advanced ray tracing options and better visual quality. This configuration lets you enjoy ray-traced reflections and shadows at 1440p while maintaining smooth gameplay. These characters do add a bit more flavour to the world and its largely homogenous population of NPCs you’re clearly not intended to look at too closely.

Astoria – Spider-bot – Blood-spider

The ropiness of this PC port is a sad addition to the issues, resulting in a flawed version of an already flawed sequel. Peter reunites with Harry and Mary Jane and attempts to return the suit to Harry, but it refuses to leave him; the three figure they need Connors’ help. While investigating Kraven, Peter discovers that Kraven is dying of cancer and is looking for someone who can give him a “warrior’s death” in combat.

Monster Hunter Wilds

Much like the first 2 games that have these segments, The missions aren’t fun to play, I would love an option to skip it and turn it into a cutscene. This game honestly feels unfinished and in desperate need of DLC as well. Much like Marvel’s Spider-Man, the sequel also has a slow, but steady build-up, as the game begins with an action segment where players have to save Manhattan from the Sandman. This portion of the game later becomes the inspiration for one of the title’s most expansive collectibles, as players later on can find Marko’s Memories scattered throughout the city. The boss fight against the Sandman sets the tone for the game’s scale, as each boss fight feels like a larger-than-life struggle with high stakes for the main characters. Furthermore, both characters have distinct abilities, so it feels fresh to switch them up.
